Linux filesystems benchmarks - Part III

It's been a while since my last benchmarks for some of the most widely used and known Linux filesystems and I think it's time to refresh them. This time, I've added ext4, which was marked stable since Linux 2.6.28 (the previous benchmarks were based on 2.6.26). Take a look at the attached file, in the first two pages, you will find information regarding my system setup, which was the basis for the new benchmarks.

Of course, any comments are always welcome. I wish you a good reading.

Update: Thanks to user Xerion at ADSLgr.com, I've attached a new PDF file, that was exported without the PDF/A-1a option checked in Openoffice.org, which had a verified bug (and fixed in version 3.2) with this option checked. This bug affected some PDF readers (like Adobe Acrobat), but not others (Evince, Okular, etc.). Thanks for the notification Xerion!

Ο Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols γράφει ένα ενδιαφέρον blog με θέμα «Five ways the Linux desktop shoots itself in the foot». Τα σημεία που θίγει είναι ενδιαφέροντα, ωστόσο εγώ θα σταθώ σε ένα, στο υπ' αριθμόν 3, με τίτλο «Too much bad techie attitude».

Convert your / filesystem to ext4

OK, we Linux users all know of the ext2 and ext3 filesystems. Ext2 and ext3 -the latest years- are ones of the most widely used filesystems for Linux. Ext3 was not much different from ext2, it's just a ext2 filesystem with a journal. In fact, you can mount a ext3 partition as ext2; the only difference is that you wοn't have a journal enabled.

Now the time has come and ext4 has emerged. After Linux 2.6.28 was released (remember, Linux is the kernel), ext4 was marked as stable. Ext4 is somewhat backwards compatible with ext3. You can mount an existing ext3 filesystem as ext4 and the new files will use the new ext4 features. You can also mount a ext4 partition as ext3, provided that you don't use extents, a new ext4 feature.

Anyway, what's the point to have a mixed ext3 and ext4 filesystem? This is a quick guide to convert your existing ext3 (or other FS type) partition to ext4, which I followed today.

KDE 4.2.0 released!

Today is the release day of KDE 4.2.0 (codename The Answer), one of the most popular desktop environments for Linux (and not only). You can find the full announcement here, where you can read about the changes and features that v.4.2.0 brings to our desktops.

I've been using KDE 4.1.4 for a couple of weeks now (actually a little after v.4.1.4 was released with a bunch of fixes mainly for the PIM applications - KMail, Korganizer, etc.) and I now admit that I like it. After seeing the KDE 4.1.x desktop for the first time as soon as I had emerged the necessary packages for my Gentoo, it seemed ackward, with some functionality missing when compared to the previous v.3.5.10 of the "old times". I had not seen v.4.0.x at all, since this version lacked the KDE 4 ports of the PIM applications, which was a very strong reason for me not to use v.4.0.x. v.4.1.x was a much better version, with bug fixes and more applications ported to the new framework. Still, some people saw that it lacked the full functionality range of v.3.5.x. So, it takes some time to get used to it.

So, today is the day of 4.2.0. The source packages have already been downloaded locally, so when all the 4.2.0 ebuilds make it to the portage tree, I will issue the famous

emerge -v world

command.

Flash plugin στα 64-bit στο Linux!

Είναι τρελοί αυτοί οι Σουηδοί. Διαβάζω στο Linux.com για μια οικογένεια Σουηδών που βαφτίσανε την κόρη τους με το όνομα του δημοφιλούς λειτουργικού συστήματος.

Linux filesystems benchmarks - Μέρος 2ο

Έπεται η συνέχεια του benchmarking των Linux filesystems. Όπως ανέφερα και στην πρώτη δημοσίευση, θα έκανα ένα δεύτερο τεστ χρησιμοποιώντας αυτή τη φορά ένα μικρότερο partition, των 17GiB.

Linux filesystems benchmarks - Μέρος 1ο

Αγόρασα πρόσφατα νέο δίσκο για το σύστημά μου, ένα Western Digital WD640AAKS. Από ένα-δύο reviews στο internet που κοίταξα, υποτίθεται ότι είναι ένας ταχύτατος δίσκος (κάτι που ζητούσα περισσότερο, παρά τη χωρητικότητα, όχι ότι θα πάει στράφι βέβαια... ). Έφτιαξα τα partition που θα δεχτούν το Gentoo, αλλά πριν προχωρήσω σε format, σκέφτηκα να μετρήσω τα διάφορα filesystem που υπάρχουν για το Linux. Συγκεκριμένα, τα ext3, XFS, JFS και ReiserFS (την παλιά 3.x έκδοση, όχι το 4).

Έτσι λοιπόν, μετά από λίγο ψάξιμο, κατέληξα στο bonnie++, ένα πρόγραμμα για τη μέτρηση της απόδοσης δίσκου.

Duke Nukem 3D και Linux

Λοιπόν. Θυμάστε το θρυλικό παιχνίδι Duke Nukem 3D (για DOS); Θυμάμαι ότι έπαιζα με τις ώρες, ήταν μεγάλο σε πλοκή, οπότε έπαιζες αρκετές μέρες.

Adobe Flash, Linux και 64-bit

Όπως είχα αναφέρει σε προηγούμενο μήνυμά μου, τρέχω πλέον Linux στα 64-bit (x86_64). Τρέχει άριστα, χωρίς πρόβλημα, εφόσον στο Gentoo μεταγλωττίζεις όλες τις εφαρμογές από τον πηγαίο κώδικα.
